The Proverbs Project: Day 9

Karen Cecilia

Proverbs 9:8

Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you.

Wise people welcome correction, fools/scoffers/mockers do not. The way we respond to correction is a good indication of the condition of our hearts and of how much we desire to be wise. Verse 9 of this chapter says that wise people who accept instruction become wiser and learn more; verse 12 tells us that when we become wise, we are the ones who benefit. Conversely, if we scorn wisdom, we are the ones who suffer.

Reflecting on this chapter today, I’m asking myself: how do I receive reproof? Do I hate correction or do I count it as a growing and learning experience? There is a promise that comes with wisdom and that is that it adds years to our lives. Are we cherishing wisdom? Are we teachable? Malleable? Humble enough to hear the words of the wise and apply them to our lives? These are some hard questions to think on this week. And while we think them over and consider where we are, let’s remember that the Holy Spirit is ready, willing and able to help us through all the uncomfortable bits of growing and learning and gaining Godly wisdom.

Father, thank you for your wisdom. Thank you that you discipline and reprove those you love. I ask that you help us to be lovers of wisdom so that we may grow and be more like you, Jesus. Help us to search our hearts and offer any offense or resistance to correction up to you. Thank you Holy Spirit that you are empowering us and doing the work in our hearts, even now. In Jesus name, amen.
